🌲 Traditional Besom Broom Maker 🌲
The besom is one of the oldest and most sacred tools in the Craft.
Long before it became a symbol of the witch in popular imagination, it was a deeply practical and spiritual object — used to sweep away negative energy, to purify sacred space, and to mark the boundary between the everyday world and the ritual one.
At Blooms and Broomsticks, we make our besoms the old way. And we always have.
Every broom begins in our own Lincolnshire woodland — two acres of Silver Birch, Willow, Cherry, Rowan, Oak and more, grown by hand from seed and cuttings over fourteen years. The birch that forms the sweeping head is harvested with care and then left to season in our barn for a full year before a single broom is made. The handles are chosen one by one from our own tree prunings — each one unique, each one carrying the character of the tree it came from.
Nothing is rushed. Nothing is mass produced. Every besom that leaves our hands has been made slowly, carefully, and with genuine respect for the materials and the tradition.
We understand what a besom means to those who use it in the Craft. It isn't just a broom. It is a tool of intention, of protection, of ceremony. That matters to us in the making, just as it matters to you in the using.
Our Besoms for Ritual & Ceremony,
Traditional Besom brooms — for hearth and altar.
Our signature handmade besoms are made entirely from woodland materials — Silver Birch head, a Tree branch handle, bound with natural jute webbing and handcrafted in the traditional manner.
Available in three signature sizes, although within reason I can make any size, and each one is always slightly different from the last.
Sizes from 115cm to 145cm — from £38
Decorated brooms
Special Besoms — for gifting and ceremony
For Sabbat celebrations, and sacred gifting.
Adorned with dried flowers and herbs grown in our own garden, ribbons, and charms. A hand-carved inscription can be added to the handle — a name, a date, a word of power, a line of poetry.
Smaller brooms from £45 — please enquire with your ideas
Handfasting Besom
Jumping the broom is one of the most beautiful and enduring handfasting traditions. Our handfasting besoms are made to order, tailored entirely to the couple — their colours, their theme, their story. Each one is a keepsake as much as a ceremony piece.
Please enquire — we love hearing what you have in mind
A Note on Our Materials
We are sometimes asked whether our materials are ethically sourced. The answer is as simple as it gets — everything comes from our own land. 'Kingswood', our woodland, sits at the bottom of our garden. We look upon the trees every day.
The Silver Birch, the Willow, the Cherry, the Rowan — we planted them. We watched them grow. We tend them through every season. When we harvest, we do so carefully and only what the woodland can give.
The dried flowers and herbs used to adorn our decorated brooms are grown in our own garden, free from chemicals, harvested by hand at the right moment.
From the seed in the ground to the broom in your hands — every part of the journey happens here, in Lincolnshire, tended by me, Michelle. The same person who makes your broom.
